• SUMMIT TALKS ABOUT BREAKING DAWN PRODUCTION

Among the many topics discussed here on this blog, and especially on my Twitter, is The Twilight Saga. More specifically, "what's the deal with Breaking Dawn?" I've avoided saying too much here because most of the information being posted (leaked) is nothing but rumors and speculation. But thanks to the astute Los Angeles Times' writer Gina McIntyre, we may have some bonafide facts.

Let's get right to the bottom line: McIntyre spoke directly with the film's producer Wyck Godfrey, who is stating publicly that no decision has yet been made as to whether or not the Breaking Dawn novel will be split into two scripts (and two movies) or one. That's not really news. What is news, though, is that he is all but confirming that New Moon director Chris Weitz will NOT be back to helm Breaking Dawn, one film or two. He's also confirming that the three stars are on board and shooting is expected to begin this fall in Vancouver.

"I think everyone would be happy and excited if he came back, but I don't think it's going to happen," Godfrey told The Times. "But right now we're just focused on the treatment and getting that right. At that point, we're going to see who's available and who's appropriate. It's such a complicated book because you have the emotions and the intensity of the love story -- so you need somebody who's just a wonderful director of actors -- and yet it's really complicated from an action and visual effects standpoint. They've got to have both tools in their kit."

As for as breaking up Breaking Dawn into two films, "It's a work in process," Godfrey told The Times. "The issue [of whether there will be one or two movies] is not going to be resolved until we get the full treatment and see whether it's organic. If it's not organic, I don't think it will be done, and if it is, it will be. It really has to do with how much level of detail from the books there is, with all of these new vampires that appear in Breaking Dawn, the whole section about Jacob...It's a very long single movie if it does become a single movie."

The three principal actors, Kristen Stewart, Rob Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner have apparently completed their negotiations and have "signed contracts." In addition, shooting is expected to begin "this fall" in Vancouver.

• BREAKING DAWN TO FILM THIS FALL?

It's been one of the biggest questions surrounding Summit Entertainment's uber-successful "Twilight" franchise (apart, of course, from whether stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson really are a couple off-screen) -- just how the producers are going to manage to pull off a big-screen adaptation of "Breaking Dawn." The fourth book in Stephenie Meyer's juggernaut of a young adult fiction series about the epic love affair between high school student Bella Swan and her good-guy vampire beau Edward Cullen has plenty of heft, clocking in at upward of 750 pages, but it also has the distinction of being the most controversial entry in the saga.

When it was released in August 2008, fan reaction was intense and divided with some "Twi-hards" expressing confusion and dismay over a plot that involved *SPOILER ALERT* a recently graduated 19-year-old Bella giving birth to a half-human/half-vamp daughter named Renesmee, who grows much faster than the average mortal child and who possesses a unique way of communicating with those around her, clearly inherited from Dad's side of the family.

Wyck Godfrey, the producer of all the films in the "Twilight" saga, admits that the creative team still doesn't know how they'll handle the character in the "Breaking Dawn" movie, but said that the plan is absolutely for the production to go forward -- as either one or two installments -- with an eye toward beginning to shoot in Vancouver this fall. All three stars are signed for "Breaking Dawn," he said, meaning that Stewart and Pattinson will be dealing with the joys and woes of interspecies parenting and newly minted heartthrob Taylor Lautner will return as often-shirtless shape-shifter Jacob Black.

At the moment, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who's penned all the "Twilight" movies, is working on the "Breaking Dawn" script(s). "It's a work in process," Godfrey said in an interview Friday. "The issue [of whether there will be one or two movies] is not going to be resolved until we get the full treatment and see whether it's organic. If it's not organic, I don't think it will be done, and if it is, it will be. It really has to do with how much level of detail from the books there is, with all of these new vampires that appear in 'Breaking Dawn,' the whole section about Jacob... It's a very long single movie if it does become a single movie."

Although there's been a great deal of online chatter about whether Chris Weitz, director of the second and most recent movie, "New Moon," would return to helm "Breaking Dawn," Godfrey downplayed that possibility, saying, "I think everyone would be happy and excited if he came back, but I don't think it's going to happen."

He and the other principals are formulating a list of potential directors, "but right now," Godfrey said, "we're just focused on the treatment and getting that right.

A visual effects background might be particularly helpful when it comes to dealing with the character of Renesmee.

"I keep having visions of '[The Curious Case of] Benjamin Button' in my head," Godfrey said, referring to David Fincher's Oscar-nominated 2008 fantasy about a man who becomes physically younger as he ages. "It's certainly going to be visual effects in some capacity along with an actor. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a full CG creation, but it also may be a human shot on a soundstage that then is used to shrink down. I don't know. We need a director. When we get a director, that director will need to come with a point of view of how they want to tackle it."

The third movie in the series, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," is due in theaters June 30.

• KRISTEN: BELLA & I ARE ON THE SAME PATH

Kristen Stewart feels she has become her ‘Twilight Saga’ character Bella Swan.

The 19-year-old actress feels “protective” of her big screen alter ego because their lives have progressed in a similar way.

She explained: “I feel like Bella has become something that is me, in a weird way. I feel very protective of her.

“Bella and I have been on a similar ride, in that during the second film she matures a bit. She’s making these drastic life decisions and she knows what she wants.

“She’s got to know herself much better. I think I’ve done the same thing through this project. It’s been a wild ride and there’s been a lot of self-evaluation. I’ve grown a lot, and so has Bella.”

Kristen also revealed she was “heartbroken” when pictures of the cast – including Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner – filming the second movie in the franchise, ‘New Moon’, were leaked.

She told Top of the Pops magazine: “I was heartbroken when pictures were all over the internet. I didn’t want anybody to see certain looks, like Taylor in his wig, because we wanted to surprise people when the movie came out.”

• KRISTEN TALKS ABOUT DAKOTA FANNING

A couple of days ago we told you about Dakota Fanning’s upcoming VMan cover for the size issue and her interview, where she talked about ‘The Runaways’, in which she stars opposite Kristen Stewart.

Here are more new quotes from the article. These belong to Kristen:

“Dakota is an astounding human being, incredibly intimidating and one of the smartest people I’ve ever met,” says Stewart. “She’s become one of my best friends. We’re so comfortable together that we have a second language.”

• ROBSTEN IS WATCHING YOU WATCHING THEM

While the Nonsten-Robsten argument heats up with more supposed Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart love sightings over in the U.K., we don't need to see antlike pics of them on rocks to know what's going down.

We just want these poor overworked kids to get a vacation! (Apparently A.T.'s the only media outlet that feels this way, whatever.) But alas, that's just never possible if you're a part of the Twilight franchise.

You'd think that in between New Moon and Eclipse promotions, Rob and Kristen would get a little bit of a break, no?

Uh-uh.

Nor is everything entirely rosy in Robstenland...

Although what we've insisted many times prior (that Rob and Kristen don't really give an ef what everybody thinks of them) still stands, nothing of the kind exists for Robsten's handlers, mainly the studio-esque kind.

"They are very aware of everything that's said about Rob and Kristen," insists Deep Twi, "and particularly right now. Just because [Rob and Kristen] are in between filming doesn't mean we're not following what's being written about them now; it will be remembered."

In other words, any outlet that cares to take a potshot at the couple—perhaps doubting the reason we're not seeing Robsten out and about is because they were only a promotional tool—will be logged and literally filed away. Just as been done before with us.

"Their people are very sensitive," insists another scooper, from deep inside the Twilight franchise, "and not only are they hyperaware about what's being reported on Rob and Kristen—it's the whole cast, too. It's an incredibly protective bunch, like a family."

(Oops! Good thing we made up with Nikki Reed, that babe we used to sometimes give a hard time to!)

Gotta say two things here: First, everybody should know that the protectors of Robsten who are being so bullish are doing so because they're an item, get it? Secondly, we don't actually tremble too much at the thought of Robsten's guard dogs, really, 'cause we're the ones who broke Rob and Kristen were sweet on each other in the first place.
