• BILLY BURKE: KRISTEN'S A BIG TALENT

Billy Burke has heaped praise on his Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart, calling her "a big talent". The American actor, who plays Kristen's character's dad Charlie Swan in Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, reckons she will continue to be a success.

"She's a big talent, she's great and lovely - we get along great, we get along almost like the two characters do," he said.

"There's not a lot of talk but we have a mutual respect and appreciation for the way each other works, and we're both there trying to create the best relationship we can in the sense of the story."

Asked about the rumours of a romance surrounding Kristen - who plays Bella Swan - and her leading man Robert Pattinson, Billy said: "I wouldn't have a f*****g clue, I really wouldn't and I don't care.

"Whatever anybody wants to do in their down time is fine with me. It has nothing to do with me whatsoever."
The Twilight Saga: New Moon is now out on DVD and Blu-ray.

• KRSITEN AND DAKOTA PICK THEIR FAVORITE SWSX ARTISTS

"[Dakota Fanning] and I went to go see Band of Horses and Broken Social Scene. She left right before Broken Social Scene played, and they brought out the chick from Metric and oh my God — it felt very South By Southwest-y. It's really crazy driving around here. The streets are loaded with really cool-looking people — and really loaded people, too! It was weird that they happened to be playing that night, because it was the first night we were here. And everyone was like 'Oh, you need to go see a show,' and Band of Horses happen to my favorite band right now ... I was very excited. I'm planning on seeing Johnny Flynn too, because he is a mutual friend. South by Southwest is so cool, because it's actually so chill and not intimidating. Usually, music festivals aren't this way. As you're approaching the city, you can hear the music. And from my hotel room, you can hear music, and it hasn't stopped."

• STEWART AND FANNING ROCK OUT IN THE RUNAWAYS

Our intrepid Entertainment Reporter Taylor Kaye sat down with The Runaways director, Canadian Floria Sigismondi, to talk about the film, the popular young stars (Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning) and the pull of good old rock n' roll.

Q: Congrats on the film! First feature film, was it comforting because it was something you knew (music and movies) so well?
Floria Sigismondi: Yeah, obviously the music part, I felt very comfortable with it. But also, you know, being a young girl brought me back to my childhood. What would it be like to be fifteen and kind of be thrown into this world?

Q: You were about ten when they (The Runaways) came out, were you listening to them? What other bands were you listening to?
Floria Sigismondi: I loved Blondie, Iggy Pop (I’ve got my Iggy shirt on). I love Iggy. “I Want To Be Your Dog” is in the film and I’m really excited about that…and some David Bowie.

Q: Why do you think it was so important for you to make this film?
Floria Sigismondi: I don’t know it just felt like a fit. It just felt like a natural thing for me to do. I had been working on making a film for a while and nothing really happened, or it didn’t stick. This one felt natural and I thought maybe I could bring an element, of not just the biopic, because I wanted to do a coming-of-age story and what it was like to be so young and thrown into that world. Also, just being sort of rebellious myself, I could identify with them.

Q: When you were fifteen and young, what are some crazy things you did?
Floria Sigismondi: I hung around the wrong people. I just did. I rode a motorcycle at a very young age, for six years and…

Q: …drove your parents crazy?
Floria Sigismondi: Oh yeah! I think my mother said “I prayed every day for that bike to be stolen.” Then, eventually, it did and I went “F#$*!” Oooops (laughing), I can’t say that. So I blame my mom for getting my motorcycle stolen.

Q: With Kristen and Dakota, they were not even alive, they were not even thoughts in their parents heads at the time – what did you have to bring to the table for them?
Floria Sigismondi: I gave them a bunch of music to listen to. Not only the Runaways’ music, also Runaways’ Youtube links. There wasn’t that much available and also that much that was “happening”. It was all pre-punk in the music scene. Then I filled up a room, floor to ceiling, just of references and it followed the film…chronologically. I had the script and I had photos so they can see the transformation of their characters. Also, what was happening in music, of that time and how that influenced the Runaways and their characters. Especially for Cherie (Dakota Fanning), just giving her a whole kind of Bowie – having her watch all of these Bowie performances so she was prepared for her character, who was really inspired by Bowie.

Q: Are you also doing a commentary on the DVD at the end as well?
Floria Sigismondi: I don’t know if that’s happening. I’ve got to talk about that when we go home because I’ve got to do one more version for the DVD and so that will probably happen.

Q: When you were picturing Joan Jett, did you picture Kristen? You probably had several female actresses in mind.
Floria Sigismondi: I wanted to work with Kristen. When I met her, I thought she was a perfect fit. She has this darkness to her but tough and vulnerable at the same time. When I met Joan, I felt all of those things. So I knew she would do a great job. She could play guitar, I knew she could sing and she had real powerful eyes. I thought that was really important for the character because the character doesn’t really express how she’s feeling. When you’re fifteen you just don’t have that - you’re still guarded. I really wanted to make it as believable…

Q: She was so believable. She did an awesome job and Dakota, I would not even imagine. I couldn’t imagine her in the role and then after I saw it, I can’t imagine anyone else.
Floria Sigismondi: Right!?!? I thought she was so great.

Q: The hair, the make-up, everything.
Floria Sigismondi: She was so great and she played it really though. She didn’t feel sorry for her character. You’re with her emotionally because she plays it like she believes it. She’s really into it. The super market scene is my favorite!

Q: Did anything crazy happen on set that you can share with us?
Floria Sigismondi: No, it was working at lightning speed and if there was, I wouldn’t have even noticed. I work out my own shenanigans (laughing).

Q: This is your first feature film, why was it important for a female to direct this film? You have that perspective because it’s a girl rock band, you’ve done the music videos…
Floria Sigismondi: I wanted it to be very raw and very realistic like all the little subtle things I brought into it, like getting ready in the bathroom because your mother doesn’t allow you to wear make-up. Those little things only girls know about, guys only see them all done up. Guys don’t know that that’s what the girls were doing - putting on the high heels behind our parent’s backs. But I think all those little subtleties, hopefully, have injected the film with some kind of authenticity on terms of the age.

Q: Congratulations and thank you so much. Can’t wait to share it with everyone in theatres.
Floria Sigismondi: Well it’s very exciting for me to come home to Canada and share this film with you…the last three years of the birth of my first feature. Thank you.

• CAREY MULLIGAN IS FRIENDS WITH KRISTEN

CAREY Mulligan has been leaning on Kristen Stewart throughout awards season.

The British beauty — who was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar at the recent Academy Awards — says she may never have made it through her red carpet appearances without the support of the Twilight star.

“Kristen has been my rock throughout this award season,” says Carey. “We did a photo shoot together and she was so lovely to me.

“We are both bad at having out photograph taken and don’t really like it so we’ve been supporting each other. She is so lovely. In general I’m not great at the mingling thing. I tend to stick in a corner.”
